Elite Matchmakers aren’t gatekeepers — we’re filters. Here’s what that means.
There’s this idea that comes up every now and then when I talk to Jewish singles about matchmaking. They have this idea that a matchmaker is somehow a “gatekeeper” — that we sift through profiles and decide who is “good enough” to meet whom.
That’s not really what an elite Jewish matchmaker does.
What does an elite Jewish matchmaker do?
We’re not gatekeepers; we’re filters.
A gatekeeper keeps people out. A filter narrows the options so you can focus on the people who might actually be right for you. It may sound like a small distinction, but in Jewish matchmaking, it’s everything.
Take Jewish dating apps. There are (theoretically) hundreds, if not thousands of singles available to you. You scroll through dozens upon dozens of Jewish singles’ profiles feeling as though you have endless choice of potential partners. But more choice doesn’t mean it’s any easier to find those specific singles with whom you are genuinely compatible. If you look for a dime in a swimming pool, does throwing more coins into the water help the search? No! More choice doesn’t make finding the right person easier — it just gives you more people to eliminate.
How Jewish Matchmaking Helps You Find the Right Match
As an elite Jewish matchmaker, I approach this distinction a bit differently. I’m not trying to decide who deserves a date with you. I’m deciding who makes sense for you. Who fits your personality, your lifestyle, your values, your expectations, and your stage of life.
And as you have probably learned by now, what looks perfect on paper might not be perfect for you.
Someone can fit your age, education, career, family background, and religious observance, and still not be a good match for you.
Why? Because people aren't résumés.
There are things you pick up on when you talk to Jewish singles that don't show up in a dating profile. The way they describe their previous relationship. What they seem overly focused on. Whether they're actually ready for a relationship or just think they should be ready. Whether they want to build a new life with their partner or are just looking for someone to fit into the life they've already built.
And filtering goes both ways.
I’m not only considering whether a potential match makes sense for you. I’m also considering whether you make sense for them. A good match has to work in both directions.
I certainly don't expect someone to agree with every match I suggest. That isn't the point. The point is that you don't have to spend your time sorting through people who will never be a good fit for you.
That’s the filter.
It’s not about keeping someone out. It's about removing the noise so you can actually see the people who have real potential. The truth is that sometimes the best match for you is someone you wouldn't have picked yourself.
Jewish matchmaking isn’t a dating shortcut. You still have to meet potential matches. You still have to talk to them to see if there is a connection. You still have to invest time, energy, and attention in getting to know this person and learning how to handle life’s challenges together.
I filter for possibility. You decide if there’s chemistry.
